'We deeply appreciate those who step forward in uniform to protect our nation and communities by serving in defence, the police force or our local emergency services organisations.
A special few serve in more ways than one.
It was an honour to join SES Emerald Unit and Emerald RSL Sub-Branch Inc. to present certificates to our dual-service men and women who give back across multiple service roles.
A special shoutout to Daryl Bristowe from Emerald RSL for organising this recognition. It was a privilege to present Daryl with a Casey Volunteer & Community Award for his commitment to recognising the service of others.'

Remembrance Day Wreath

Thursday 6th November 2025 was our wreath making night - together we made a beautiful, meaningful wreath to be laid at our Remembrance Day Service.
We asked our members to bring a flower, stem, sprig or gumnuts from their garden - and as they put their piece into the wreath base, they said a prayer or dedication to someone they are remembering this Remembrance Day.

So much fun!

Dinner with Afghan Interpreters at Dandenong RSL

On 7 October 2025, I had the privilege of attending a dinner hosted by the Dandenong RSL, bringing together around fifty Afghan interpreters who served alongside Australian and coalition forces during the war in Afghanistan. Also in attendance were RSL Victoria representatives and fellow Afghan veterans, including State Executive Member Eamon Hale.
The evening provided an opportunity to express gratitude to the interpreters whose courage and loyalty underpinned countless Australian operations. These men stood shoulder to shoulder with us in some of the most demanding and dangerous environments imaginable. Many can no longer return to their homeland due to the risks they face from the Taliban, but they have more than earned their place here in Australia, where they continue to contribute to our community.
It was a powerful and emotional evening—sharing stories, memories, and laughter that bridged cultures and reaffirmed the enduring bonds of service. Gatherings like this remind us that mateship does not end when the mission does, and that remembrance must extend beyond our own uniforms to those who stood beside us in battle.
Sincere thanks go to Vladimir, Stu, and Lance from the Dandenong RSL for hosting such a meaningful event. Their leadership in fostering inclusion and remembrance ensures that the sacrifices of both Australian and Afghan veterans will never be forgotten.

Reflections from the 2025 RSL Veterans Ball - A Night to Remember
by Chris May

On the evening of July 19th, my wife Laura and I had the honour of attending the RSL Veterans Ball at the Sofitel Grand Ballroom in Melbourne. Surrounded by fellow veterans, family members, and supporters, it was a night of camaraderie, reflection, and pride in what it means to be part of Victoria’s veteran community.
We were seated with members of the Doreen RSL Sub-Branch—an inspiring group who share their local football club rooms for Friday night gatherings, a reminder that the RSL spirit thrives in both grand halls and humble clubrooms across the state.
One of the key themes of the evening was unity. Dr Mark Schröffel, the newly elected RSL Victoria State President, delivered a powerful address, outlining his vision for a more connected and inclusive future for RSL sub-branches. His words reinforced the importance of standing together—sharing our experiences, supporting one another, and continuing the legacy of those who came before us.
A particularly moving element of the night was presented by military historian David Brown. Every table setting included a card bearing the name of a Victorian veteran who had died on July 19th at some point in our nation’s history. These cards included not only the name and age of the soldier, but also where they fell and what they did before going to war. Many of the names belonged to those who were killed during the Battle of Fromelles in 1916—a day of profound loss for Australia. Some cards bore an asterisk, indicating that the soldier’s remains have never been recovered and still lie on the Western Front. The youngest listed was just 16; the oldest, 52. It was a sobering and deeply emotional reminder of the sacrifices made by Victorians in service to our country.
Another heartfelt moment came when Mr. Doug Baird, father of the late Corporal Cameron Baird VC MG, spoke about his son’s legacy. He shared the story of a young man who was shaped by family, friends, and the values instilled in him—a man who always put his mates first, right to the very end. His words were a poignant reminder of the strength found in our families and communities, and the role they play in shaping those who serve.
As the formalities concluded, the night transformed into a celebration of mateship. Old friends reunited, new connections were made, and a sense of pride filled the room. It was a wonderful tribute to the RSL’s enduring role in fostering connection, remembrance, and belonging.
I look forward to seeing the Emerald RSL Sub-Branch come together to attend next year’s Veterans Ball. Events like these reaffirm why the RSL matters—not just as a place of commemoration, but as a living, breathing community that honours the past while building a strong future for all who have served.
Lest we forget.
Warm regards,
Chris May OAM

Safe travels
'Kokoda Kids'
After their trip was cancelled at the last hour in 2024, a group of students and leaders from Emerald Secondary College will be trekking the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea in early July.
It’s been our pleasure to support the groups fundraising efforts, and it was great to reconnect this week prior to their journey.
We wish you all safe travels!

"It was a great privilege to attend the Emerald RSL’s annual awards ceremony — a moving tribute to those who served in conflicts across our nation’s history.
These awards acknowledge the courage, sacrifice and service of the great Australians who have worn our uniform with pride.
A very special thank you to Daryl Bristowe, whose tireless dedication to this cause has seen him present over 600 awards over many years. Daryl, your commitment to honouring our veterans is nothing short of extraordinary.
Thank you also to my colleagues Aaron Violi MP and Daniela De Martino MP for attending, and to Kane Falconer (President) and Tanya Jogan (Secretary) for their leadership and hard work behind the scenes.
It is vital that we continue to remember and honour those who served, ensuring their legacy is never forgotten.
Their sacrifices built the freedoms we enjoy today — we will always be grateful.
Lest we forget"

"Very honoured to be named in the 2025 Kings Birthday Honours and Awards list as a recipient of the Medal of the Order of Australia for service to veterans and the community.
I’d like to thank Laura and Henry for always being supportive during my great “ideas” as well as all my friends that come to help when the call is sent out! Mostly because they get dragged into it.
And a big Thanks to those that took the time to nominate me, be referees for and research all the stuff I’ve done. It’s trip down memory lane reading it all! From kicking off Young Veterans back in 2012, my time in the ADF, supporting causes like RSL Victoria’s ANZAC appeal, Disaster Relief Australia, CFA or SES, Fight MND or the Melbourne Firefighter Stair Climb. It sure has been a ride
A big congratulations to all the other amazing Australians named in today’s Honours and Awards list!"
